Associate Fellow, Geoeconomics and Strategy, International Institute for Strategic Studies
Christopher Jhon Clague is an associate fellow in Geoeconomics and Strategy at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. An independent advisor to governments and multinationals, he works at the intersection of trade, supply chains, illicit trade, and geopolitics. He contributes to IISS’s Strategic Comments, writing on the future of the WTO, free-trade agreements, and the challenges of “friendshoring.”
Previously, Chris held editorial roles at The Economist Group and served on Flexport’s economic research team. At The Economist Intelligence Unit, he edited The World to 2050 (with Nikkei BP) and created or co-created major research programs including the Global Illicit Trade Environment Index, Trade in Transition, and the Safe Cities Index.
Chris holds an MSc in Asian Politics from SOAS, University of London, and a Certificate in International Trade and Law from the World Trade Institute. He has appeared on BBC, CNN, and MSNBC, and is currently based in Penang, Malaysia.
