Executive Director for the Government of Ras Al Khaimah Waste Management Agency
Engr. Sonia Nasser was appointed the Executive Director for the Government of Ras Al Khaimah Waste Management Agency in 2017 by HH Sheikh Saud bin Saqr al Qasimi. She is a Registered Professional Civil Engineer in California, and has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Sonia has over 30 years of diverse engineering experience in waste management, watershed planning, environmental management and public works.
Sonia leads the Waste Management Agency team who plan, engineer, regulate collect, recycle, treat and dispose of all hazardous and nonhazardous waste in the Emirate of Ras al Khaimah
Ms. Nasser began her career with the Los Angeles Department of Public Works- then worked 15 years with County of Orange California – in various depts. ; Public Works, Watershed & Coastal Resources, and Dana Point Harbor. She then moved onto consulting and was the Vice President of Sustainability at Bryan Stirrat & Associates/Tetra Tech in Diamond Bar California.
Sonia was also the first woman President of the Orange County Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers , and held various poss such as the Chair of the ASCE Infrastructure Report Card on Solid Waste for Orange County, California.
Engr. Nasser currently serves on the advisory panel for the Master’s of Energy and Sustainability Program at the Ecole Polytechnique Federal Lausanne in Switzerland. Sonia also serves on the advisory panel for the School of Engineering at the American University Ras Al Khaimah, the Ras al Khaimah Public Health Committee and the Ras al Khaimah Renewable Energy & Efficiency Committee.
Sonia has been married 26 years to her wonderful husband Mohamad Nasser They have two daughters, Sara and Samar. Both daughters attended Choeuifat School in Ras al Khaimah and both received four-year scholarships to study at the American University in Beirut. Sara will graduate in 2020 as an Industrial Engineer with a Minor in Music and Samar will graduate in 2021 as a Civil/Environmental engineer with a Minor in English Literature.
