The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF) has launched a new translation workshop as one of a series of specialised training workshops  the Foundation is organising to empower a generation of young Arab professionals in various creative writing disciplines.

As Part of the Dubai International Programme for Writing, the session is presented by Mr. Kamel Youssef who is a professional translator. It seeks to train young translators to improve their skills and accuracy over the course of 4 months; each participant will translate a book from English to Arabic, while Qindeel Printing, Publishing and Distribution – MBRF’s publishing arm – will print and publish the finished works.

“The Dubai International Programme for Writing continues with its activities that seek to train and empower talented Arab writers in various genres,” noted His Excellency Jamal bin Huwaireb, CEO of MBRF. “This, in turn, goes to accomplish the Foundation’s objectives to train generations of innovators in the Arab world, and secure opportunities for them through projects and initiatives that bring them together with experts in various sectors to benefit from their experience and knowledge.”

The translation workshop is divided into four five-day sub-workshops, the first of which revolves around discussing the proposed projects with the participants, shedding light on translation as a distinct branch of knowledge, and exploring obstacles that translators face.

The second sub-workshop focuses on literary translation, presenting various ways to translate novels, short stories, literary essays, travel literature, and biographies. The third sub-workshop outlines the rules of translation of technical materials, from historical texts and social studies, to political analyses, and economic and administrative reports. The fourth and final sub-workshop introduces participants to the overlap between translation and editing, highlighting common errors.

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation has organised two previous translation workshops training 10 aspiring translators and publishing 10 works that were well received at book fairs, including major international exhibitions.
