Global Knowledge Index: Driving Sustainable Development of Nations and Communities In an era where knowledge is the true capital, the Global Knowledge Index (GKI) stands out as a strategic tool for tracking countries' progress in building innovation-driven, education-focused, and technology-based societies. Released annually by the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, the GKI goes beyond data collection to offer in-depth analysis of the global knowledge landscape. It serves as a trusted resource for policymakers and researchers working to shape effective development strategies. The GKI is a vital analytical tool that provides deep insight into various dimensions of knowledge and development, supporting the formulation of development policies based on informed perspectives. The GKI consists of seven composite sub-indicators, each representing a distinct sector that reflects a key pillar of the knowledge economy. These sectors include education, information and communication technology, research and development, the economy, and other enabling factors. The indicators are used to measure performance in each sector individually, helping to identify gaps and guide investments in human capital. GKI also strengthens countries’ ability to build resilient, knowledge-based economies capable of addressing global challenges and creating effective solutions that promote human well-being and societal advancement. Since its launch, the GKI has become a leading global reference for guiding sustainable development efforts. In its latest 2024 edition, it reached more than 1,881,565 people, reflecting its expanding global influence. To understand the future of development, we must begin with knowledge.
